Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Crispy skin, juicy inside - The air fryer locks in moisture while crisping the skin beautifully.
- Big flavor, simple ingredients - That garlic-lemon marinade does all the heavy lifting.
- Perfect for small households - Cook one now, freeze the rest for later when you are ready.
- Flexible timing - Even 30 minutes of marinating works, but overnight takes it over the top.
- Great for mixed households - Make this for dark meat lovers while cooking something else for the white meat fans.
From my kitchen: It took me a while to warm up to air fryers (small kitchen problems!), but once I switched to one with a glass basket so I could actually see what was cooking, I was all in.
Main Ingredient Notes And Easy Substitutions

Let's talk ingredients: what you need, what you can swap, and how to make it work with what's in your pantry. The full list is waiting down in the recipe card.
- Chicken leg quarters - Bone-in, skin-on is key for flavor and crispiness. Mine usually weigh about 16 ounces each, so adjust cook time if yours are much larger or smaller.
- Olive oil + lemon juice - Helps tenderize the chicken and adds brightness. Lime juice works in a pinch.
- Garlic + spices - A simple blend of paprika, Italian seasoning, and chili powder gives depth without being overpowering.
- Chicken bouillon base - This is my little secret weapon for boosting savory flavor (I like Better Than Bouillon).
- Cooking spray - Helps that skin crisp up beautifully in the air fryer.
Recipe Variations And Twists
- Make it spicy - Add cayenne or red pepper flakes.
- No lemon? - Swap with lime for a slightly different citrus flavor.
- Oven option - Bake at 400°F for 40-45 minutes, flipping halfway.
- Use smaller cuts - Chicken thighs work great-just reduce cook time.
How To Make Air Fryer Chicken Leg Quarters (Step-By-Step Guide)
This is a summary of the steps; the complete directions are in the recipe card below.

- Make the marinade: Whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, bouillon, pepper, onion powder, and chili powder until well combined.

- Marinate the chicken: Place the chicken leg quarters in a zip-lock bag or a dish, and coat them thoroughly. Marinate for at least 1 hour (overnight is best for flavor).

- Preheat the air fryer: Set to 385°F and preheat for about 5 minutes.
- Cook skin-side down: Place the chicken in the basket, skin-side down, and cook for 15 minutes.

- Flip and finish cooking: Turn the chicken over, lightly spray with oil, and cook for another 10-12 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
- Optional crisping step: For extra-crispy skin, increase the temperature to 400°F for the last 2-3 minutes.
- Rest and serve: Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving to keep it juicy.

Serving Ideas
This chicken plays well with just about anything Southern and comforting:
- Creamy mac and cheese
- Mashed potatoes or Twice-Baked Loaded Potatoes
- American Coleslaw (especially with BBQ-style meals)
- Cornbread or Cornmeal Drop Biscuits
- Southern Corn Salad, or Broccoli Salad
Recipe FAQs (Including Storage, Reheating, And Freezing)
For a 16-18-ounce piece of chicken, cook at 385°F for about 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
Yes, and it's recommended. Overnight marinating gives the best flavor and tenderness.
Absolutely. I often marinate all four pieces, cook one, and freeze the other three individually for later.
Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 4-6 minutes to restore crispiness.
Yes. Cook at 380°F for 35-40 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Tips For Perfect Results Every Time
- Marinate longer for better flavor - Overnight is ideal.
- Don't overcrowd the basket - Air circulation = crispy skin.
- Use a thermometer - Always check for 165°F in the thickest part.
- Start skin-side down - Helps render fat and crisp the skin.
- Let it rest before serving - Keeps everything juicy.

Air Fryer Chicken Quarters
Ingredients
- 4 chicken leg quarters
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 3 cloves minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon base – I like to use Better than Bouillon, Roasted Chicken flavor
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- Olive oil spray
Instructions
- Whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, chicken bouillon, pepper, onion powder, and chili powder until well combined.
- Place the chicken quarters in a large zip-lock bag or a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken, coating each piece very well.
- Marinate the chicken for at least one hour, but overnight is best.
- Preheat your air fryer to 385°F before cooking the chicken.
- Remove the chicken from the marinade and place it skin side down in the basket. Brush some of the spice mixture from the marinade onto the chicken. Cook for 15 minutes.
- Flip the chicken over and lightly spray the tops with cooking spray. Cook for another 10-12 minutes.
- Use a meat thermometer to check that the internal temperature has reached 165°F. Sprinkle with some coarse salt to finish. Allow the chicken to rest for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Depending on your air fryer’s size, you may need to cook the pieces in two batches since the quarters take up a lot of space.
- Don't crowd the pieces, or they will not crisp up.
- If you want extra-crispy skin, increase the air fryer temperature to 400°F during the last few minutes of cooking.
- I recommend letting the chicken marinate as long as possible, ideally overnight. This not only makes dinner prep easier but also enhances the meat’s flavor.
- Always check the chicken’s temperature with a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh, not touching the bone. It should reach 165°F for safe eating.
