Air Fryer Pulled Pork (Juicy, Crispy & Ready Fast—No Smoker Needed)

What is Air Fryer Pulled Pork, and How Does it Work?

Air fryer pulled pork is a faster, small-batch way to make tender, shredded pork using pork shoulder or pork butt. Instead of smoking for hours, the pork is wrapped and cooked in the air fryer until fall-apart tender, then optionally crisped for those irresistible caramelized edges.

    Quick Look at the Recipe

⏱ Ready in: About 2 hours, plus rest time | Serves: 6-8 | Difficulty: Easy | Make-Ahead Friendly: Yes

If you're craving classic Southern pulled pork but don't want to babysit a smoker all day, this air fryer version delivers tender, juicy results with a fraction of the effort and just enough crispy edges to make it downright irresistible.

If you love easy pork dinners, you might also enjoy my crock pot pork chops and apples or oven-roasted country-style ribs, both reader favorites.

I've tested this method with both whole pieces and smaller cuts, and wrapping the pork tightly in foil makes all the difference in keeping it tender and juicy.

For the perfect finishing touch, top it with my Spicy Coleslaw-the cool, creamy crunch with a little kick is exactly what this rich pulled pork needs.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Tender, juicy pulled pork without hours in the smoker
    • A true no-fuss air fryer method, just set it and let it cook
    • Like my Slow Cooker Pulled Pork, it’s perfect for sandwiches, sliders, tacos, and my favorite, Brunswick stew
    • Great for meal prep and it freezes beautifully
    • This easy air fryer pulled pork recipe optional crispy edge finish step takes it over the top

    Ingredient Notes and Smart Swaps

Here's everything you need to make this easy air fryer pulled pork. (Full measurements are in the recipe card below.)

Ingredients to make air-fryer pulled pork, include a boston butt pork roast, barbecue sauce, and seasonings.
    • Boneless pork butt (or pork shoulder) - A 3-4 lb roast works best. Cut it into large pieces so it fits your air fryer basket. Fat = flavor here. I usually cut my pork in half, cook half, and freeze the other half for another time.
    • Honey - Helps the spice rub stick and adds a subtle, unexpected sweetness.
    • Spices - Garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, paprika, oregano, thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper. This blend builds that classic BBQ flavor.
    • Barbecue sauce - Use your favorite. Sweet, smoky, or spicy all work. I often reach for Sweet Baby Ray's.

💡 Smart Swap: No pork butt? Pork shoulder works just as well. Want a little heat? Add cayenne, chipotle powder, or Cajun seasoning to the rub.

    Fun Twists and Variations

    • Make pulled pork sliders with Hawaiian rolls
    • Serve over mashed potatoes for a cozy bowl meal
    • Pile onto nachos or baked potatoes
    • Try different BBQ sauces-mustard, vinegar, or Carolina-style. My family likes Sweet Baby Ray’s, but use your favorite-sweet, smoky, or spicy all work.

How to Make the Best Air Fryer Pulled Pork

Pulled pork in foil in an air fryer basket topped with honey and other seasonings.
    1. Prep the pork: Cut the pork into large chunks or halves so it fits comfortably in your air fryer basket. Place on foil, rub with honey, then coat generously with the spice blend. Let it sit for about 30 minutes.
Air Fryer pulled pork with the roast wrapped tightly in foil in an air fryer basket.
    1. Wrap and cook: Wrap tightly in foil, then air-fry at 365°F for 45 minutes.
A pork butt in an air fryer basket wrapped in foil is being flipped over.
    1. Flip and continue cooking: Flip, rewrap, and cook another 45 minutes. Continue cooking in 10-15-minute intervals, depending on the size of your pork pieces, until the internal temperature reaches 200°F-205°F.
A pork butt cooked in an air fryer on a cutting board with the meat being shredded.
    1. Rest and shred: Let the pork rest for 20-30 minutes, then shred using forks, meat claws, or even a hand mixer.
    1. Optional-but highly recommended-crisping step: Return the shredded pork to the air fryer (uncovered) for 3-5 minutes at 400°F to create those crispy, caramelized edges. Toss the pork lightly with sauce or pan juices before serving.

👉 This step is what takes it from good to "where has this been all my life?"

    Recipe FAQs

Can you make pulled pork in the air fryer?

Yes! By cooking pork shoulder or pork butt in foil at a steady temperature, the air fryer can produce tender, shred-worthy pulled pork in much less time than traditional methods.

How long does air fryer pulled pork take?

Most recipes take about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the size of the pork and your air fryer model.

What cut of pork is best for air fryer pulled pork?

Pork butt (Boston butt) or pork shoulder works best because of the fat content, which keeps the meat juicy and flavorful.

How do you keep pulled pork from drying out in the air fryer?

Wrap it tightly in foil while cooking and avoid overcooking. Be sure to save your pan juices and add a bit of sauce or broth when reheating, which also helps keep it moist.

Can you crisp pulled pork in the air fryer?

Can you crisp pulled pork in the air fryer?

Yes-and you should! After shredding, return it to the air fryer for a few minutes to crisp the edges and add extra flavor and texture.

Tips to Ensure This Recipe Turns Out Perfectly

    • Cut pork into pieces that fit your air fryer comfortably
    • Cook to internal temp, not just time (200-205°F is key)
    • Wrap the pork tightly in foil, and be sure it is sealed to lock in moisture
    • Let it rest before shredding
    • Be sure to save your pan juices; they are gold and will keep your shredded pork moist.
    • Don't skip the crisping step if you want maximum flavor

    Equipment

    • Air Fryer

    Ingredients

    • 1½ to 2 pounds pork butt boneless
    • 3 tablespoons honey
    • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
    • 2 teaspoons onion powder
    • 1 teaspoon chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1 teaspoon paprika
    • 1 teaspoon oregano
    • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt
    • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
    • ½ cup barbecue sauce,
    • 6-8 hamburger buns for serving

    Instructions

    • Place the pork, fat side down, on a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Top the pork butt with the honey and seasonings.
    • Allow the meat to sit for 30 minutes to absorb the seasonings and reach room temperature.
    • Wrap the pork tightly in foil and seal it completely. Cook the pork for 45 minutes at 365°F.
    • Open up the foil. Flip, rewrap, and cook another 45 minutes. Continue cooking in 10-15-minute intervals until the internal temperature reaches 200°F-205°F. and the meat falls apart.
    • Let the pork rest for 20-30 minutes, then shred it with forks, meat claws, or a hand mixer.
    • Optional-but highly recommended-crisping step: Return the shredded pork to the air fryer (uncovered) for 3-5 minutes at 400°F to create crispy, caramelized edges. Toss lightly with BBQ sauce or pan juices before serving.

    Notes

It’s hard to find pork butts that are only 11/2 or 2 pounds. I usually purchase a 3-4 pound one, cut it in half, cook one, and freeze one for later.
Please note that cooking times will vary depending on the size and the pork’s internal temperature when you start cooking. You are looking for a final internal temperature of 200-205°F.
The recipe works best with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Be sure to use a sheet, or even two, that is large enough to completely cover the pork and seal it completely so that the juice doesn’t leak out while it is cooking.
Be sure to save your pan juices and pour them over your pork when you store it to keep it moist.
